The Prophecy of Famines

Recently we began looking at the lesser known prophecies of the end time and saw disobedience of the younger generation as a prophesied event, as was war. Famines were also a prophesied event. Beyond the physical act of starvation is the spiritual famine that results from not being fed spiritually, the famine of the hearing of the word, and it is with a heavy heart that I write this study as it appears that a person who often preached and wrote about the word of God in a place far north of El Paso has died. I know his race has been run to completeness and in the twinkling of an eye as he will consciously reckon time, he will be with Jesus and God. His death reminds me of the phrase the famine of the hearing of the word; it will be God's prerogative when in God's time it will be time for the famine of the hearing of the word. Famine is the widespread lack of food that is also mentioned in Matthew 24 that we have studied the past few weeks, and as every other indicator, these are all given to us as just the beginning of sorrows.

Matthew 24:3-8
And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world? And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows.

Looking at Biblical prophecy, we know through Revelation and the final prophecies before the return of Jesus that famine will continue. Notice what is recorded in Revelation. The third of the four horsemen rides the black horse, and this rider with a measuring scale was measuring low amounts of wheat and barley and indicated there was little oil and wine available. This black horse preceded death, as famine often does.

Revelation 6:5-7
And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand. And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine. And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, Come and see.

With the passing of the person from up north who preached and wrote about the words of God, as I am reminded of the famine of the hearing of the word of God, and I remind everyone that this famine of the hearing of the word will be in God's time. At the future time, people will search for the word of God and will NOT find it. People will be starving for the word of the Lord.

Amos 8:11-14
Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD: And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it. In that day shall the fair virgins and young men faint for thirst. They that swear by the sin of Samaria, and say, Thy god, O Dan, liveth; and, The manner of Beersheba liveth; even they shall fall, and never rise up again.

These verses also show that at that time there will also be a famine of food. The prophecy of famine is one of the lessor known prophecies of the end time and the beginning of sorrows. And for the man who wrote and preached about the word of God and for all who knew him, we know in the twinkling of an eye he will be resurrected and that it is equally our race to run to completion.
